The folders on this Wow! CD-ROM contain trial versions of Web page design
tools, Web browsers, browser plug-ins, and other utilities you'll enjoy
using. Each folder also contains an "About . . . " or "ReadMe" file
explaining the files found in that folder, any Shareware fees involved, how to install these items and how to use them. (The back cover of The Web Design WOW! Book also tell about the disc contents.)
First of all, the wowbooks.com site gives you a way to link to the many exciting sites showcased in The Web Design Wow! Book.
To get to the wowbooks.com site (aside from the obvious of typing in the URL http://www.wowbooks.com into your open browser), you can make the connection via Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer from the desktop by following the instructions below. (If your connection to the Web is through America Online, you’ll need to sign on to AOL before following these platform-specific instructions.)
• From a Windows-based machine with either Netscape or Internet Explorer installed as your browser, double-click the WOWBOOKS.HTM icon.
• From a Macintosh, click, double-click either the WowBooks.com (Explorer) or the WowBooks.com (Netscape) icon, depending on which of these browsers you use.
If you don't have a browser, we've included the latest versions of both
Netscape Communicator (make sure you install the correct version for your
computer's processor) and Internet Explorer for your browsing pleasure.
They're in the folder called "Web browsers." (Duhh.)
For full Web-browsing pleasure, you need to empower your browser to deal
with the multimedia-enriched pages you're bound to come across. That's what
the contents of the "Browser Plug-Ins" folder are for. Run the Shockwave
and RealPlayer installers and your browser will be able to deal with almost
any multimedia file.
Before you go too much farther, run the "Acrobat 3.01 Reader Installer" In the "Utilities" folder (unless you've already got it) to allow you to open Acrobat documents.
Also in the "Utilities" folder are several nifty shareware programs for helping you to prepare graphics for the Web (if you like them, please pay the shareware fee!) and the freeware file decoder and unstuffer, "Stuffit Expander."
The folder called "WYSIWYG Editors" contains 30-day trial versions (or
save-disabled demos) of these powerful "What You See Is What You Get" tools
for creating great web pages:
Adobe PageMill 2
Claris Home Page 3
Macromedia Dreamweaver 1
NetObjects Fusion 2
For those of you who want to get your hands dirty with raw HTML, we've
provided two versions of the text editor BBEdit in the "HTML Editors" folder:
BBEdit 4.5.1 Demo (all the features of the commercial version, but you
can't save any documents)
BBEdit Lite 4.1 (limited in features, but allows you to save documents)
Have fun!
